The Whales Are Back

The Fish Are Back

The Kelp Is Back

Forty years ago the waters off the coast of Southern California were barren. The whales were gone, the dolphins were scarce, the kelp had died, there were no pelicans left to roam the skies or baitfish to fill the sea. Our local ocean was dead.

But today the area is teeming with life. Blue whales are everywhere along with finbacks, humpbacks, grays and even orcas. Resident bottlenose dolphin play in the surf as Mega-pods of common dolphin ply the Catalina Channel. California brown pelicans fill the skies fishing huge schools of baitfish and plankton. And the kelp has recovered to a point where it’s become a navigational hazard. Why?

In this age of blaming humanity for all environmental ills, how did one of the world’s most unique ecosystems located in one of the world’s most populated areas come back from the brink of disaster? And, is it at risk of being wiped out again? Join us and find out.

A Five Part Webcast to 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th Graders

In conjunction with Jean-Michel Cousteau and his Ocean Futures Society, Bay In Balance will deliver an educational and entertaining five-part webisode series presented to 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders at no charge to school districts, teachers and students for the first year.  Each webisode will be accompanied by professionally developed curriculum produced by nationally recognized NGSS and STEM teachers and include online tests, class discussion points and essay topics.

In addition, students will receive a “Call-to-action.”  This year’s goal: How do we minimize the use of “single-use plastic bottles?” Students will have 30 days to present their “Best Idea.” The winners will be announced with great pomp and circumstance, the Grand Prize, an all-expense paid trip for two to the Jean-Michel Cousteau Ocean Futures Family Camp on Catalina Island.

2019 and Beyond

Bay In Balance will continue with a new webisode series released for 2018 and beyond:

2019 – New York Harbor
2020 – Pearl Harbor
2021 – Lake Erie
2022 – Chesapeake Bay
2023 – Puget Sound
… and beyond

There are over 16 million 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th-grade students in the United States. These 10-14-year-olds are eager to make a difference. They are extremely a sought-after demographic. “Parents are increasingly letting kids dictate, or at least have a vote on, purchases ranging from breakfast food to large ticket items like TVs, cars and vacation destinations,” says Christian Kurz, vice president of research at Viacom International Media Networks. Combined these kids either purchase or influence over $139 billion in sales annually.

Bay In Balance will reach our young people with the message, “You can make a difference.” This is a very salient message and one with which corporate Partners will want to be associated.

TL NGSS Consulting

Bay In Balance has partnered with TL NGSS Consulting who currently are employed by and implement curriculum for the Torrance Unified School District. In addition, these group of extraordinary educators continue to work with and are mentored by Ramona Chang, who testified in front of Congress in 2008 about the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum.  As K-12 science teachers and current science resource teachers, they offer a comprehensive approach to curriculum development that allows teachers to implement 5E model lessons relevant to their content. Their program has been implemented in K-12 districts with impeccable feedback and teacher growth in both NGSS knowledge and the 5E Instructional Model.

Bay In Balance

There is something very unusual happening off the coast of Southern California.  It’s affecting the ocean and the animals up and down the coast of the Golden State they call home.  From the mighty whale down to the tiny plankton on which it feeds, the entire ecosystem is involved.  And so is mankind. But this story is different because in this story we are the heroes.
